The Bourne Romance

To celebrate the opening of The Bourne Ultimatum this week, I went out and bought the previous two movies. That was only because my friend was supposed to let me borrow them and didn't come through. But, hey, they're worth the 10 bucks a piece.

I've only seen both movies once. The first one, Identity, was barely recognizable. There was a lot I had forgotten. It even makes me wonder why they felt a sequel was justified. But I think the franchise didn't really take off until the second movie, Supremacy. That's when I truly realized we had a James Bond in the making. Each movie was able to develop the character further, quite successfully.

So I was eagerly awaiting the third installment. And it didn't fail to entertain me. Although I was a bit let down on where it ended, the movie delivered on everything I expected. Great action. Great character development. A great movie.

Where I was let down was partly my own doing. They say every great movie is a great love story. I was wondering who Jason Bourne's love interest could be in this movie. His last girlfriend Marie was killed off and she was the catalyst for the last two movies. I wondered who it would be this movie. I had a brief thought that it could possibly be Nicky Parsons. She's been in the other two movies. She's a very minor character who has ties to Jason. I thought that would be a good idea.

Then when you watch the movie (This has nothing to do with the main plot line so there's no spoilers here) there is a brief scene in a diner where Nicky sits across from Jason and looks at him like a long lost lover. Then she asks him, "You really don't remember anything, do you?"

I knew I called that one right. So the rest of the movie I'm anticipating the Jason Bourne/Nicky Parsons story line that never comes. There's even a scene where Nicky has to dye her hair, like Marie had to do in the first one. But Jason doesn't help her do it like he helped Marie. And Jason just looks at her completely unattached. You can tell the thought running through his head is, "Not now. I can't deal with another relationship at this moment." Or maybe he was protecting her; not wanting her to end up dead like Marie. Either way, the storyline was dropped.

But The very end leads you to believe the powers that be know there is going to be another movie so we should set it up as such. When they end on Nicky Parsons watching television announcing Jason was still alive, she smiles. The ending I wanted was Jason appears out of nowhere to take Nicky in his arms and kiss her. But they already did that in the first movie and such an ending wasn't properly set up.

The Bourne Romance - The Jason and Nicky Story. That's the story I was anticipating and that's the movie I want to see.

I completely agree with you. One of the biggest things I wanted to happen was Nikki and Jason getting together in the end. I really hope that they have another movie where Nikki and Jason are able to get together.

I know what you mean, but found it really unusual that they bothered to include it as a teaser without following it through. Annoying! American films usually tie everything up and even the slightest glance has a meaning, which is usually explained by the dying minutes of the film.
Still a great film though.

Me too i wanna see that movie! I am such a shipper it's embarrassing HAHA. Still, it's good that the pair did not push through, the situation was believable. I also like Nicky's reservation towards talking to Jason about it; she knows it is inappropriate. He does not remember anything and while being chased around who has the time for love? I just hope that Nicky's hair was originally black so I can say Marie reminded Jason of Nicky and not the other way around.

See how smart you are? Think about it... Nicky was responsible for the psychological health of all Treadstone agents. And she says "you really don't remember do you?" ... but she *also says* "It was difficult... for me... with you." So she had regular contact and served the agents and he doesn't remember that. Also in the book he had been married with kids who were assumed killed. Can you see that you were not given your "bourne romance" because it maybe a much bigger "bourne legacy"? I say... let's be patient and enjoy the building mystery of their past in the next installment... I mean now that we know his name is David Webb, we need to have some lost memories to find out through his eyes.

As much as I would like this romance with nickki and and jason, another movie isnt going to happen. It cant happen, because there is no story that would supplement..enough...the first 3. You cant go from an action adventure shoot em up with fights and high adreneline to a romantic storyline. In order for these writers and Matt Damon to go and do another film, to write it, set it up, pay for it and film...it MUST be AS good if not better than the third....or it will not be worth it to him and non-deserving to the audience. A story line of some other part of the government coming after him to finish the job the job would be one example..but that cant happen either...it would be too redundant. After analyzing what could jump start a profitable and a movie WORTH making...I cant find that mix of an action adventure along with that Nikki connection. There is just nothing there anymore. Yes the nikki scenes in the movie were OBVIOUS to anyone...and yes it did leave it slightly open....but to make a forth you are going to need more than that...more than a love attraction and more than just an investigation of Jason's history. As curious as those things are..they arent enough to make a movie...thats more like a book...not another movie...and yes there is a difference. I think the chase is over...Jason's identity has come back to him...he knows his name, and Nikki made it out alive along with the all the government bad guys going down....I think thats it...there is nothing much they use to jump start things from there. I would LOVE to see another movie...but in my opinion....there isnt anything worth chasing anymore....or else its going to fail to meet the expectations of the previous movies. And nobody associated with the series wants that.

Oh ye of little faith, Anonymous October 12th. Just because "The Bourne Ultimatum" was the last Bourne novels (other than "The Bourne Legacy" and "The Bourne Betrayal," written by someone else) doesn't mean it absolutely has to be the final Bourne film. If Landy become the new CIA Director the world (and plot potential) is full of possibilities. David Webb could be a CIA consultant and advisor, putting his finger on the pulse of all manner of cases, any of which could pull him back into the fray.

in the next movie, they both have sex and have an illegitimate child together.

We the audience, more rather Jason Bourne him self now knows the name on the dog tag-he knows his identity. But knowing he's David Webb, does this really mean he knows who he truly was? I think not. Looking beyond the general CIA documents and the few flashbacks which are all about his involvement with the CIA doesn't tell us much about the man, the true persona behind Webb. The very person who created him told him he no longer was who he was, he was solely theirs now. And throughout the movie we continue to see the person who the CIA created(the weapon, the brains, and might I say the muscles of steel that is Jason Bourne:3) Few times do we actually get a glimpse of who the real person, David Webb could have been like the cherished time he spends with his deceased girlfriend, Marie. I do believe a potential sequel or perhaps even a prequel can be made in order for the audience to get a better sense of who he really was like. Surely, we're curious as to what were his motives, or true motives for even volunteering for such a project. The movie explains protecting American lives, but the writers can further add to that (an example would be he'd want to forget something or rather he wanted to escape, start completely anew etc.) His training in order to be Bourne and reason for such a drastic memory loss also was never really explained thoroughly. Drastic twists and a potential for great new characters who could have influnced Bourne to be the way he is now could be introduced, not to mention the inner conflict which could arise from David having to seprate the human weapon for the human in him as he learns to adapt to normalcy even though we know a bourne movie wouldn't be so without the awesome martial art action, the wild goose chases along with the spectacular new views/scenery that come with it!

It is understandable why Nikki and Bourne, although having an apparent history together wouldn't be emphasized. Bourne had just recently suffered through lost of a loved one. it takes time, often even years for one to truly move on and the moments where Nikki reminded him of Marie or possibly the other way around, (I mean who really knows with not much elaboration on either characters, Nikki and Bourne, past) could have helped him cope and move on. No, this takes another film, possibly one in a future setting to have and elaborate on what was: a Nikki and Webb relationship ;)

Who knows, but keep your fingers crosses Bourne fans. I know I am.

just bought the dvd today. i think that jason and nikki had kids together and their kids were killed. its why jason had an easy time saying yes to the program. to forget and to have his memory erased. im thinking maybe nikki was either a part of the system already or joined just like jason to find justice and closure. it would make sense that jason could not kill the african leader in bourne identity because he had compassion for the leader's kids because it triggered a memory of his own kids and death of loved ones. i think if they were to make a new bourne movie, it would involve the lost memory of his wife (probably nikki), how his kids were murdered, and jason's revenge for those who killed his children.

I actaully have a question..i know there are two other sequels made by a different authoer (LEgacy/Betrayal), does Nikki Parsons have a role in them?

I like it as is....unpredictable. It would've spoiled a great trilogy if they'd hooked up .like alot of movies one can always predict the endings. Good to finally see one that leaves us hanging. Yes I agree Jason & Nikki had a past but Marie, the only person he knew being killed in front of him, the reason he left Indiia giving him pay back to Tredstone was the reason for the the next two movies. So as I said ... a Jason & Nikki reunion ...it wouldn't have been as good as it was.
